The Netanyahu government is painfully aware that the hatred of Israel sweeping across the democratic world is preparing public opinion for Israel’s elimination from the Middle East. That this hatred is conspicuous in American colleges and universities should not shock astute observers if only because Israel, in its essence, rejects everything that now dominates academia: nihilism and atheism. There is no way in the world that this hatred of Israel can be overcome by reasoned argument - or what Israel calls “hasbara” (information) programs. The West has already sacrificed whatever remains of the Enlightenment or the Age of Reason. When a terrorist group like Hamas can use women and children as protective shields against Israel’s belated retaliation against years of Arab bombardment of Israeli towns, and yet gain support from American academics, (and now support from Obama’s proposed $900 million in aid to Hamas and the PA) - it’s farewell to reason as well as human decency.
Let us recall certain lessons on war by one of the greatest military scientists, General Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831). Clausewitz’s magnum opus, On War, is studied in military schools to this day. He defines war as “an act of violence intended to compel our opponent to fulfill our will. Violence is the means; submission of the enemy to our will the ultimate object.” For as long as the enemy remains armed, he will wait for a more favorable moment for action. The ultimate object of war is political. To attain this object fully, the enemy must be disarmed. Disarming the enemy “becomes therefore the immediate object of hostilities. It takes the place of the final object and puts it aside as something we can eliminate from our calculations.”
Israel today is in a state of political disarray. Established political parties like the National Religious Party are dissolving. Other parties like Labor have become politically comatose. The ruling Kadima Party, formed by political opportunists from other parties, has no ideology apart from multiculturalism. This essentially anti-Jewish party wants to dissolve the State of Israel into “a state of its citizens.”
If you are wondering why the deluge of information about Obama’s shady past has not eliminated him from the presidential race; If you are wondering why Obama may become America’s next president despite voluminous evidence of his being a liar and a fraud; Let me reveal the secret underlying this grotesque state of affairs. We are living in a postmodern world where truth and falsity are no longer relevant.
When opinion rules, as it does in democracies, it is only necessary to examine, not its truth, but the number of those who express this opinion. It is not even necessary to examine whether any individual who expresses this opinion is serious or frivolous, whether his opinion is the result of reflection or of impulse, whether it is an abiding conviction or a passing fancy. Consequently, wherever opinions rule, people are less apt to take opinions seriously. Hence they will be less likely to develop the habit of critical thinking or of making logical and moral distinctions. Feelings or the emotions will thus tend to supplant logic. People will then become more susceptible to propaganda, whose target is the emotions. It is in this light that we are to understand Senator Barack Obama’s use of such slogans as CHANGE and YES WE CAN.
Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin may lose the November election unless they speak like real mavericks and distinguish their political positions more sharply from those of their mediocre opponents. They are trailing in the polls for several reasons. The most decisive reason is their own mediocre performance. They are preoccupied too much with bread-and-butter issues on which they cannot score many points. Most significant, however, is their avoidance of the paramount issue confronting America, an issue that transcends the present economic crisis but which can arouse and inspire most Americans. America is at war. To win this war we need to understand ourselves as well as the enemy. This is a two-fold task that McCain and Palin have failed to address in a serious way.
The likelihood of a US attack on Iran is almost zero. Simple reason: the Straits of Hormuz. Through this Iranian controlled waterway, roughly 40 percent of the world’s crude oil passes every day, including two-thirds of the oil from Saudi Arabia. This is enough reason for the US to veto an Israeli attack. But there is no reason whatever to expect diplomacy to give up its drive to become a nuclear power. As for tougher sanctions, Germany, Russia, and China have invested too much in Iran to cooperate. So, I think the US will do nothing more than help some reformers, hoping that that Iran’s bleak economy will produce regime change. www.PaulEidelberg.com
This week is the 220th ratification anniversary of the American Constitution creating the Republic that is the longest lasting free government in history. America saved Europe from tyranny three times in the twentieth century, and today it is the only solid bastion of freedom against totalitarian Islam. What is not generally known, however, is that the American Constitution was rooted in ethical and political principles whose source is none other than the Torah, the Five Books of Moses. Protestant social revolutionary reformers, especially the Puritans of New England, saw in the Torah models for modern government. Strange as it may seem, contemporary Israel, reputedly a democracy, does not have a constitution.
On September 17, Kadima, the ruling party of Ehud Olmert’s coalition government, held an election to determine who would replace him as Israel’s Prime Minister. The election was won by Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, portrayed in the media as “Mrs. Clean.” The previous day, Caroline Glick, deputy managing editor of The Jerusalem Post, wrote: “Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni may not be a crook, but she is a fraud … just one fraudulent election away from becoming our next prime minister.” As we shall see, however, Livni is not the mother of all frauds—merely one of its many children. Glick sees that “unlike all the other party primaries that have been held over the years, the Kadima primary is designed not as a preparatory step ahead of general elections to the Knesset. Rather,it is intended to replace general elections.” Having won that primary, Livni will have 42 days to put together a ruling coalition. Failure to do so would mean a new general election in early 2009, a year and a half ahead of schedule. Olmert, who is a crookas well as a fraud, will remain as a caretaker leader until a new coalition is approved by the Knesset. (This could easily take 3-6 months.)
The root cause of terrorism is simply this: Arab or Muslim terrorists are patronized, more precisely, they are rewarded for killing and maiming innocent human beings! But what kind of regime would reward such monsters? Harvard professor Alan Dershowitz writes: “Every single root cause associated with terrorism has existed for centuries, and the vast majority of groups with equivalent or more compelling causes—and with greater poverty—have never resorted to terrorism.” The Historic fact is that since the inception of Islam some 1,400 years ago, Muslims are reported to have slaughtered millions of “infidels”!!! [Illustrated with the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon on 9-11-01 where 3000 perished only seven years ago].
Middle East analyst Emanuel A. Winston discusses various sponsors and mentors who seem to have been behind Barack Obama’s meteoric rise to public prominence and who may have influenced his political orientation. Among those mentioned are the anti-American author Khalid al-Mansour, the principle adviser of Saudi billionaire Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal; the notorious Columbia University Professor Edward Said, once a member of the PLO; and Syrian-born Tony Rezko, a Chicago politician who became executive director of the Muhammad Ali Foundation to spread Islam. To the preceding one must add Obama’s mentor the Rev. “God-damn-America” Jeremiah Wright, whose church Obama attended for 20 years. Winston rightly concludes that America is poised to elect a man to the presidency whose known mentors and sponsors put a lie to just about everything Obama has said on the campaign trail. Winston adroitly refers to Senator Obama as a “Mansourian candidate.” Let me offer some other sobriquets that may give the reader a glimpse into Obama’s mysterious character.
I never cease to be amazed and humbled by the number of pundits who, without any classified information, confidently prognosticate on global affairs, especially on the United States and Israel. So what is a political scientist like me to say when asked whether the U.S. or Israel is going to bomb Iran to prevent its development of nuclear weapons? Almost any person who takes 9/11 seriously and has heard about Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s boast of a world without America and Israel, should be able to see that a nuclear-armed Iran would be a mortal threat to Western civilization. It requires no political scientist to see that a nuclear Iran would control the vast oil reserves of the Persian Gulf and cow an already cowed Europe. This, he would see, would be enough to devastate the American economy and bring the last bastion of freedom and human dignity to a miserable end. As for Israel, one nuclear strike would doom it to oblivion. Exit Judaism as well as Christianity.
Former US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton recently raised the question of a possible Israeli attack on Iran. Writing in the Wall Street Journal, Bolton urged the US to aid Israel before, during, and after such an attack—if it should take place. This may mean that Bolton does not believe a US attack on Iran is in the cards. Indeed, pundits report that Washington is opposed to an Israeli preemptive strike because it would “destabilize” the region. Really!!! And what would a nuclear armed-Iran do to the region—especially now that Vladimir Putin (allied with Iran) is restoring the Cold War, largely by means of Russia’s oil and gas resources on which Europe is dependent?
Colleagues of mine have made some discerning comments about Governor Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention. I have added a couple of my own.
Sarah Pallin displays what is most lacking in many people in high office: CHARACTER. Character is far more fundamental and important than “experience,” because without good character, experience will not enable office –holders to deal with the tough issues confronting our country.
Since Barack Obama is the first Black presidential candidate in American history, it was essential to make him personally familiar to the American people. This could not be done by speaking of his legislative accomplishments, of which none is worth mentioning. Nor could such familiarity be achieved by speaking of Obama’s experience in world affairs, of which he is less than an amateur.
