I woke up this morning wishing that yesterday’s news of Rush Limbaugh’s passing was just a bad dream, and I’d tune in as usual and hear his voice. Alas, it is not to be. His death leaves a huge void that will never be filled.
Yesterday’s terrible news brought back a nice memory from 1992. I had mailed Rush a joke (yes, mail back then) the premise of which was that both the actor Warren Beatty and Senator Ted Kennedy were notorious womanizers. About five minutes before his show was to begin my phone rang, and it was Rush. He said he liked the joke and asked for my permission to use it on the air. “Yes, Mr. Limbaugh,” I said. “I sent it to you hoping you would.”
At some point during that day’s show he noted that Beatty had become engaged to be married and said:
“I see that after all his years of carousing, Warren Betty is finally getting married. His friend Ted Kennedy was so sad when he heard the news, he lowered his zipper to half mast.”
Rush used that same joke in various contexts for several years. If it was a gift that kept on giving, so was Rush’s show.
