Although a registered Republican, I’ve been angry with the GOP since they took back the Senate in the 2014 election under false pretenses. They ran pledging to oppose President Barack Obama’s leftist agenda, including socialized medicine, and then spent the next two years giving him everything he asked for in an historic double cross.
This fueled a rage among enough betrayed Republicans around the country to hand the presidential nomination to Donald Trump. With Senate Republicans behaving in milquetoast fashion, they were in no mood for politics as usual as represented by his multitude of primary opponents.
I had hoped Republicans in Washington would have grown a spine between then and now, but such is not the case. With mob rule dictating radical changes to our culture beyond anything we could have imagined, it’s a given that most Democrats would fail to condemn the looting, arson and violence. Not a peep from Pelosi, Schumer et al. But where are the Republicans? With the exception of President Trump and a few others such as Senators Tom Cotton and Ted Cruz and Representatives Jim Jordan and Matt Gaetz, what we’re seeing is capitulation.
Are Republicans so afraid of the mobs that they would rather sit back and watch the country be destroyed than stand up to them? Ideally, Republican officeholders should be physically standing in front of statues the mobs want to tear down. Yes, it would take guts, but what the Founding Fathers did in 1776 took a lot more. The least I’d expect is the Republicans fighting back verbally, but what we’re hearing instead is the flapping sound made by the white flag of surrender.
And if Republicans want to portray themselves as the party of law and order, it might be helpful if some of them besides Trump speak out in defense of law enforcement. Just a thought.
Should Republicans remain mostly silent in the face of anarchy and the erasing of our history by those who were never taught it, their chances of retaining the Senate may drop as low as property values in Minneapolis. If America goes under, if this is our last Fourth of July under freedom, history will record that President Trump was abandoned by a party too cowardly to give him the support he needed to save the country.
