Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said President Ronald Reagan won the Cold War without firing a single shot. In another war, America’s socialists have achieved the country they want without a single vote being cast.

We are now living in AOC’s and Bernie Sanders’ America. As would happen under their policies, the economy has collapsed with millions out of work and private sector businesses going bankrupt, freedoms have been lost, there are shortages of some goods, dissenters are jailed and the government is involved in every aspect of our lives. There is no longer any need to speculate what a socialist America would look like, we’re living it.

In addition to the loss of civil liberties, what we have now is the Green New Deal Lite. The Green New Deal specifies no cars and planes; both have been greatly reduced. It demands no meat; we have a meat shortage. It would kill factories; factories are idle. It bans fossil fuels; gas demand is way down. We have even had Venezuelan-style shortages of toilet paper and long lineups at food banks.

All of this might end someday if or when the pandemic recedes. But at the moment, socialists like AOC and Bernie Sanders, not to mention Democrat governors in states like California, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Maine, can survey the virus-ravaged landscape from a position of triumph.
