The first time I heard John Lennon’s “Imagine” in 1971 I hated it, interpreting it as a call for worldwide socialism. What could not have been predicted way back then was that the song could easily be the anthem for the Democrat Party in 2019.
Lennon later admitted that most of the lyrics were written by bedmate Yoko Ono, but they could have been written today by Alexandria Hyphen-Cortez, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren or any of their fellow travelers. Taking into account what the Democrats are advocating, do the lyrics look similar to what we’re hearing on the campaign trail today?
“Imagine”
Imagine there’s no heaven,It’s easy if you try
No hell below us. Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today
Imagine there’s no countries,It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace
You, you may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us, and the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world
You, you may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us and the world will live as one
“No heaven and no hell:” Of course not, in a system where values and virtues no longer matter.
“No countries:” The open borders the socialists want to inflict on us.
“Nothing to kill or die for:” America must not defend itself against Islamic terrorism or other forms of evil.
“No religion:” The secular America the socialists are striving for. Remove God from American life.
“No possessions:” Socialism will take care of that, as in Venezuela.
“I hope someday you’ll join us:” If the polls are to be believed, more and more Americans, especially the younger generation, are signing on to socialism, along with the mainstream media, colleges and the entire educational system and the popular culture led by Hollywood.
Whether those who believe in freedom can weather this onslaught remains to be seen, but while the Democrats plot our country’s destruction, what I prefer to imagine is an America kept great by the reelection of President Trump in 2020. And I’ll take Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” over Lennon’s salute to socialism anytime.
