Many of today’s Americans were alive when Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries successfully took over Cuba in 1959, and memories of show trials and thousands of his political executions remain quite alive. Castro was a brutal, murderous dictator who will go to his reward after he died today.
But why no mention of his executions in this Los Angeles Times story in the Chicago Tribune of his life? President Barack Obama sends his condolences to the Castro family, ignoring the misery, death and crimes against humanity that Castro caused. Yes, he outed a brutal dictator–lgencio Batista–but Castro turned out to be no better for the Cuban people. Sure go ahead and blame the United States’ embargo for Cuba’s failing economy and praise Castro for this health care and education “reforms.” But if you believe in democracy, you know that you don’t need a tyrant to implement those reforms. Mussolini made the Italian trains run on time, but he was a fascist dictator. Mussolini, Hitler, Lenin, Stalin and Castro were all cut from the same cloth.
The communist Soviet Union failed because it embraced a system that wouldn’t and couldn’t work. Castro demonstrated again that the revolution of the proletariat is nothing more than a pipe dream that extracted a heavy human toll. We must not forget that.
