The man who launched a candidacy, won his party’s nomination, won the presidency, and until now, sustained his presidency, on well-delivered rhetoric is setting out to, well, give more speeches.
Facing the increasing implosion and unpopularity of the cornerstone of his “fundamental transformation of the nation”—Obamacare—President Obama has decided that more speeches on the topic is just what the doctor ordered.
In a piece entitled, “White House Returns to Sales Mode,” (as if it ever left it…), Politico reports:
“President Barack Obama will launch a coordinated campaign Tuesday by the White House, congressional Democrats and their outside allies to return attention to why the Affordable Care Act passed in the first place.
“After two months of intense coverage of the botched HealthCare.gov rollout, the president will host a White House event kicking off a three-week drive to refocus the public on the law’s benefits, senior administration officials told POLITICO.
“The White House will take the lead in emphasizing a different benefit each day until the Dec. 23 enrollment deadline for Jan. 1 coverage. The daily message will be amplified through press events and social media by Democratic members of Congress, the Democratic National Committee, congressional campaign committees and advocacy organizations, officials said.”
Contrary to what so many top Democrats—including Obama—told us when they were ramming this disaster through on a straight party-line vote, the more Americans see of Obamacare, the LESS they like it. It was never popular, but previous polling had been based on Obamacare as a theoretical proposition….something that existed but wasn’t quite real yet. Now it’s a reality—and a nightmare—and the approval of it is sliding to ever-lower lows. That’s because now people are actually living this thing. It’s effecting their daily lives and the most intimate parts of their lives: their health care, their doctors, and their wallets.
The website fiasco didn’t help things for Obama and his Obamacare believers. But it’s not about the website. It’s about socialized medicine that doesn’t work and is unaffordable at every level—and which the vast majority of Americans do not want. Obama and his White House team are now doing what they’ve always done when in trouble: setting out on a PR campaign….as if the problems with Obamacare are PR problems only. As if another speech by Obama will turn people around on this. As if it’s a communications problem instead of a policy problem.
I happen to think that Obama doesn’t CARE whether it’s popular or not, or even if it works or not. After all, his ultimate goal—stated MANY times—is pure socialized medicine, single payer. Many of the problems with Obamacare were baked into the cake to get the thing to fail so they could say, “See? We tried private insurance companies and private exchanges and they just didn’t work, and now we have all of these people in the system, so we have no choice but to go with single payer.”
I think he’s giving speeches simply to buy time to get to that point. Meanwhile, other Democrats—especially those up for re-election next year—who aren’t as invested in Obama’s “fundamental transformation of the nation” as he is—are running for their lives. He won’t bend much to their pressure—as he didn’t in 2010—because for him it’s not about party or anything other than locking into place his ideological change for America. More BS speeches aren’t going to change anything…and I don’t think he much cares.
