It looks like the Republican leadership is preparing the Big Cave to President Obama and Harry Reid.
The GOP thinks it looks oh-so-strong by demanding that the Obama administration check the income levels of those who receive an ObamaCare subsidy. But guess what? That provision is ALREADY THE LAW. The Republicans aren’t getting a serious concession. They’re getting Democrats to say that they will actually enforce their own law. At the same time, the Republicans look like they’re willing to let the rest of the year proceed above sequester level spending, allow the unions another yet another ObamaCare waiver, and extend the debt limit to February. It also looks like they are “demanding” a delay in the medical device tax (which, while a horrendous tax, is something the special interest lobbyists have been demanding, so it’s more of a sop to them than any kind of “rescue” of these companies and consumers.)
None of this defunds ObamaCare. None of it even delays it. None of it requires that the whole thing go into effect without a single waiver or exemption. If the GOP is going to cave, then they should just cave on the entirety of ObamaCare and let the whole painful thing be inflicted on everyone at the same time, no exceptions, no waivers, no delays.
But it looks like the GOP leadership is willing to make ObamaCare go forward with as little pain as possible to the administration and party that forced it on us.
Shameful. Not surprising, but shameful. And the backlash is very profound and very real. As RedState.com’s Erick Erickson said, “The RedState contact email is now getting one anti-GOP email for every one anti-Democrat email. That has never happened before. All these polls showing America hates the GOP are accurate. Even Republicans hate the GOP and the GOP might have to learn that the hard way in 2014 primaries.”
In the meantime, the rest of us will have to live with the epic and shameful cave-in of a bunch of GOP establishment weasels—who will, mark my words, be held accountable for their cowardice, cynicism, and lack of principle.
