I’ll tell you what – if I were a woman in Egypt (or someone who loves or cares about a woman or a girl there), I’d be making urgent plans to flee that place.
As I feared from the start of the so-called Arab Spring, the once-“moderate” Muslim nation has elected themselves right out of any chance at modern normalcy.
Those people have no-doubt had their first and last real election for generations, having voted in a man who immediately granted himself a virtual emperorship from a “party” bent on subjugating its population, starting with the women.
This, I’m convinced, will be the fate of every Arab Spring country, because, while some of the demonstrators who risked life and limb likely believed they were doing so for democratic change, the whole thing was really sponsored by Iran. That Islamic/enveloped barbaric-terrorist-producing regime is now howling like rabid wolves at Israel from nearly all sides.
But, before it tries to fulfill its ultimate mission – finishing Hitler’s work – it must first, history’s previous infamous murderous tyrants, cow the populace into submission. History teaches us that this usually starts with the intellectuals, though, in Islam, it seems to start with the women (which could be one in the same thing). And it often first spews from the pulpit.
Associated Press reported recently that “one of Egypt’s most prominent ultraconservative Muslim clerics reportedly said, “This constitution has more complete restraints on rights than ever existed before in any Egyptian constitution.” As though this were a good thing.
“This will not be a democracy that can allow what God forbids or forbid what God allows.”
The main problem with that, of course, is it’s based on the interpretation of a often questionably sane “holy book,” presumably based on the “teachings” of a questionably ethical man by almost certainly crazy adherents.
This draft constitution, AP reports, would “empower Islamists to carry out the most widespread and strictest implementation of Islamic law that modern Egypt has seen.” It would, both sides say, “make Muslim clerics the arbiters for many civil rights,” and it allow the establishment of “Saudi-style ‘religious police’ to monitor morals and enforce segregation of the sexes, imposition of Islamic dress codes and even harsh punishments for adultery and theft — regardless of what laws on the books say.”
Supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated new “president” insist the Egyptian people want a non-secular Islamist state, and I’m certain they will make sure anyone caught not wanting that will be made to vanish from the scene.
It’s an old story and one that never ends well for the regular people.
Like those earlier totalitarian regimes insisted they were championing a righteous cause, these new tyrants say they are defending Islam.
People are reportedly demonstrating against the imposition of this terrible, stifling dark shroud, but I fear they’re doomed to fail. The big money is behind the monster.
The Islamists assure their backers that the new ‘constitution’ “prevents what he called an ‘American or European’ democracy that gives the power of legislation to people and not to God.”’
Some are reporting that before they gave up and walked away from the process, the liberals and Christians who had been involved were duped into signing onto Shariah elements, “not realizing the articles’ significance.”
“They only got it later and that’s why they said it was disastrous,” A.P reported.
The document’s language likely means banning interest on loans, forbidding mixing of genders, requiring women to wear headscarves and allowing girls to marry when they reach puberty, the story says.
“Article 10, for example, commits both the state and ‘society’ to protecting ‘the moral values’ of the “true Egyptian family,” vague language experts believe empowers private citizens to enforce Islamic morals. “It could even give a constitutional justification for the creation of religious police, known as commissions ‘for the promotion of virtue and prevention of vice,’” the story says.
It drops a clause specifying women have equal rights to men, experts say.
An Egyptian youth activist warned in his blog that “if this constitution is passed, Cairo will truly become Kandahar, with the blessing of the Egyptian president and the Muslim Brotherhood,” the story says.
That would be the same Kandahar, where under the Taliban, girls can be executed for learning to read; where they can’t work, much less become a doctor, and where they are forbidden to see a male doctor.
Flee, girls and women of Egypt! The writing on the wall is clear. Flee, before it’s too late!
