Ran across this little ditty the other day and thought it was interesting.
It seems that ‘till now, the United States Department of Justice may have been buying American flags made in other countries.
Seems to me like a total no-brainer that American flags used by the United States government ought to be made in America. In fact, it seems to me that everything used by the United States government that can be found made here, is what should be used. It actually never occurred to me that our own government would buy American flags or White House furniture or dishes or desks or anything else, that was not made by the people who pay their salaries.
They’ll pay thousands of dollars for a toilet seat, but want to save a few cents on American flags?
Really.
Anyway, a local Congressman here named Mike Thompson made note of this stupidity and got everyone to agree that the DOD should buy only American-made U.S. flags.
I wonder if they have this issue in other countries.
I wonder if Afghan flags are made in India or Chinese flags are made in America. Just curious.
Anyway, the agreement says from now on, the DOD’s U.S. flags will be made here out of American materials.
Ridiculous that a rule needed passing for this, but, this is the United States, and we do inexplicable stuff sometimes.
“Every American flag the DOD buys should be made in America, by American workers with American products,” Thompson said in a news release. “At a time when our manufacturing sector is struggling and millions in our country are out of work, it is a slap in the face to all Americans to have their tax dollars spent on U.S. flags that are made overseas.”
Already, it seems, the Department of Veterans Affairs is required to only purchase American-made flags for service members’ funerals.
I should hope so.
