“The Help” is an Academy Award nominated film based on a book set in the early Civil Rights South. The story is very popular, presenting both comedy and drama, and although it is fiction it cuts like fact.
When a book or film affects the outlook of society, someone should ask who and what it benefits. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” was fiction yet impacted society for good by bringing attention to the evils of slavery. The message was timely and, according to President Lincoln propelled the Civil War
But is “The Help’s” message timely? Frankly, I think not. It stirs emotions, but not in a beneficial way. Rather than recognizing and encouraging progress in racial equality, it pulls us back to the beginning of the struggle and leaves us with a fight song fit for 50 years ago. I would be surprised to hear of any audience of mixed blacks and whites that walked out in bonhomie. In short, the film beats a politically correct lame horse and does not benefit mainstream America today.
So then, what does “The Help” help? Islamic evangelism. I have been in many settings where Muslim evangelists target blacks by reminding them of the history of slavery in America while denying the vast history of Islamic slavery – which was not only practiced by Mohammed, but fueled American slavery and continued in the Muslim World until fairly recent times. The common word for a black person in Arabic, “Abd”, even means “slave”.
When I watched the credits roll by at the end of the film and saw that a producer from the Middle East was a major funder of “The Help” it made sense. America itself does not benefit from the film’s dated message; we would benefit from positive messages building encouragement and unity. But since the expansion of Islam in America targets students and those feeling disenfranchised – blacks, prisoners, Hispanics, and overweight women – it clearly benefits from encouraging racial discord. The testimonies of black converts usually cite racism as the reason they turned to Islam.
Thus, funding “The Help” indirectly promotes the expansion of Islam in America.
