If you still think the Arab Spring in Egypt is a pro-Democracy movement, here’s a little something to chew on from the Associated Press.
It seems the Islamists who took over after the ouster of longtime dictator Hosni Mubarak — something that should have tipped people off to where this whole thing was heading — are threatening the peace deal with Israel if the U.S. complains about its citizens being arrested and tried.
The leader of Egypt’s Islamist Muslim Brotherhood party accuses several American nonprofit organizations of fomenting Democracy, another clue to where these folks are headed.
“Egypt claims the four U.S. groups are fomenting protests against the country’s military rulers and sowing discord,” A.P. reports. “Judges have referred 16 Americans, including six currently in Egypt and barred from traveling, and 27 others to criminal court. No date for the trial has been set yet.”
A senior Cabinet minister accused several U.S. nonprofits “of using the foreign funds to foment pro-democracy protests against the country’s military rulers,” A.P. reports.
This has caused the U.S. to threaten to cut the $1.3 billion in military aid and $250 million in economic assistance it sends Egypt each year. But the Islamists say the money is their payoff for keeping the peace with Israel and they could “reconsider” the 30-year-old treaty if the money is withheld. Egyptian officials in recent months have said the peace deal with Israel “is not sacred and can be amended.”
Sounds a little bit like blackmail to me, but what do I know?
But it’s not a surprise. At least it’s not to me.
I think it’s clear the so-called Arab Spring is leading to a very dark worldwide Winter and I think this development is a harbinger of that.
Since the “Spring” the Muslim Brotherhood predictably emerged as Egypt’s dominant political force. Its political arm, the (laughably named) Freedom and Justice Party, holds nearly half the seats in Egypt’s parliament. A sure sign a country is working toward Democracy if ever I saw one.
I’m not Nostradamus, but even I can predict stuff very much like this cropping up all over the Arab world as the real impetus behind the so-called Arab Spring, otherwise known as Iran, starts closing its iron fist around its new vassals. And it will come as a big shock to many people there and around the world, just as Hitler’s real plan did, once the people of Germany realized what it was. But by then, as we all know, it was too late to stop it easily.
I’m not sure we’re not already past the point of no return with Iran, but I’d vote to step in now, without waiting to find out.
