We’ve got a mixed bag today. Google reported and missed. Microsoft reported and missed. Intuitive Surgical reported and hit big. IBM reported and missed revenues while hitting profits. The end results; Google got nailed overnight; Microsoft went up; Intuitive Surgical went down big while IBM was up nicely.
Before you conclude that increased profits and revenues don’t matter (they do; just longer than overnight), you need to recognize that the markets right now are schizophrenic; that’s why trying to trade a market like this can make you crazy. There seemingly is no rhyme or reason to short term price swings. Well, hello…….that’s the way it has always been. Do you buy on the rumor or sell on the news? Is it different this time or isn’t it? Do you listen to Cramer or to Rodgers? Is there blood in the street? Is it my blood?
JUST EXACTLY WHAT IS IT I’M SUPPOSED TO DO?
I’m darned if I know; and, that is precisely the point. For anybody to be able to guide you through choppy waters like we have now, you need help with the navigation. Now, I recognize that all of you will see that last comment as self serving, and I plead guilty. In other words, you need me. As much as you may hate to have to pay me; it doesn’t alter the fact that you need me (or an advisor of your choosing). The reason you need me is pretty obvious. Most of you stink at this. This has nothing to do with brains or ability. It has everything to do with experience managing emotion. When it comes to money, most of you will panic because you are scared of what you don’t know. There are other factors as well. I can’t imagine that most of you are familiar with the various nuances inherent in different investment strategies any more than I would be familiar with the intricacies of doing your jobs. Why would I know? Better, how can I be expected to know, and yet, most of you think that you can do my job better than I can having no training and no experience.
· Well, you can’t. So, I extend an offer. I promise that I will not attempt to fix my own plumbing, roofing, electrical, engineering, legal, medical, accounting, landscaping, etc. if you will promise to not try to manage your own money. In other words, for heaven’s sake; CALL ME.
