That air strike Israel made in 2007 that was rumored to have destroyed a Syrian nuclear reactor did, in fact, do just that, according to a confidential memo from Condoleezza Rice to State Department representatives worldwide, a cable leaked to WikiLeaks says.
The cable, sent in April 2008, read, in part, that “On September 6, 2007, Israel destroyed a nuclear reactor Syria was clandestinely constructing, we judge with North Korean assistance.”
The cable reportedly says that American intelligence confirmed, after months of independent investigation, what the Israelis had told them.
Here’s another example of a possible positive consequence of the WikiLeaks leaks.
Although Israel hasn’t confirmed or denied involvement in the strike and Syria has tried to say the site was not a nuclear reactor but a “military installation,” this memo shows those in the know, know better.
“The Israeli mission was successful – the reactor was damaged beyond repair. Syria has completed efforts to clean up the site and destroy evidence of what was really there, constructing a new building on the old site,” according to the memo.
Had Syria succeeded in completing and bringing a nuclear reactor online, available not just to the Syrians but also to their overlord and benefactor, Iran, right on Israel’s border, the consequences to Israel, the region and the world, would have been unthinkable.
For at least the second time in only about 30 years, Israel has essentially saved the world.
Will she get a public thank you?
Don’t hold your breath.
