Anti-Semitic ads that had been set to appear on downtown Seattle busses about “Israeli war crimes,” are not going up, after all.
This is probably partly due to that city’s officials’ desire to keep the counter ads that were submitted from either having to also run, or having to explain why they didn’t.
They likely chose to scrap the whole thing, when they learned that charging the pro-Israel ads’ producers something like twice what the pro-terrorist ads backers were charged didn’t cause the pro-Israel advertisers to back down.
King County Executive Dow Constantine on Dec. 24 ordered the Metro Transit system to reject the anti-Semitic ad as well as any other new noncommercial advertising, JTA reported.
The Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign reportedly paid $1,794 to place the ads on 12 buses starting Dec. 27, the day Israel entered Gaza to stop rocket attacks on its towns and cities, JTA reported. The ads featured a group of children looking at a demolished building under the words, “Israeli War Crimes: Your tax dollars at work.”
A group called the American Freedom Defense Initiative then submitted two counter ads which showed Hamas’ anti-Israel and anti-U.S. rallies under the heading “One Billion Dollars to Hamas: Your Taxpayer dollars at Work.”
A review of the transit system’s advertising policy was ordered, which found ads for Seattle buses are acceptable as long as they don’t publicize pornography, alcohol and tobacco and as long as they don’t interfere with public safety or incite a riot.
Constantine said Dec. 24 the signs were rejected because they presented “significant security concerns.”
He said this was particularly true of the response ads, and he’s probably right, but not because the anti-Semitic ads aren’t more reprehensible than the response, but because they only insult Jews and their supporters, as opposed to the response ads, which could have ignited the so-called “Arab street,” making wholesale, widespread random violence likely.
This could be one case in which terrorism backfired for the Islamo-Fascists because the pro-Israel camp fired back in a timely fashion in the propaganda war.
It’s a good thing.
