The drama continues in the oil-fraught shores of the Gulf Coast, where a completely inept federal response from the White House now has critics on both the left and the right labeling this disaster as Obama’s Katrina.
Last week, after nearly a month of finger pointing and BP browbeating, the Obama administration resorted to their very last option and claimed responsibility for an inadequate response to the oil spill disaster. “In case you were wondering who’s responsible” the President told us, “I take responsibility.” Well thank you for stating the obvious, sir…you are the President! You are in charge, whether you like it or not.
But even during this totally pointless, belated speech, Obama still couldn’t resist making political gestures. After brushing aside objections from experts, he ordered crisis manager Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen to build artificial barrier islands that would protect beaches and wetlands as soon as possible . . .even though Republican governor Billy Jindal has been begging for supplies for weeks.
Then at last, the administration took the painful question head on, but refused to compare this crisis to Katrina. Then he went ahead and did it anyway, telling us that “When the problem is solved…I’m confident people are going to look back and say that this administration was on top of what was an unprecedented crisis.” Must be a spill of snakeoil in Washington; we’re not buying it.
Sooner or later, the spill will stop and the process of cleaning up the appalling damage will begin. We’ll watch amazed, as the resistive power of nature unfolds and the landscape recovers . . .just as it did 21 years ago with the Exxon Valdez spill of. What can we take away from it now? First of all, we shouldn’t be drilling in 5,000 feet of water. The technical pandemonium that’s going on right now is the devastating price we pay for folding in to environmentalist demands. Lastly, if this is the government response to a real crisis: inadequate, unconcerned, inept and without leadership — how much faith do you give them to handle your healthcare?
