I am new to the world of politics. For 20 years I’ve been serving my community as a CPA and Tax Accountant. I never imagined that when I entered the race for Congress from the 42nd district that I’d be swept up into a world of half-truths and deceptions but that is what has happened in my campaign to unseat six-term incumbent Gary Miller.
Here’s how politicians spin things and make up untruths: I received a warm message from a friend of many years, Pastor Chuck Smith when he learned that I was running for Congress. It was not an endorsement but rather warm words of praise from a respected religious leader who said that he was happy I was running and that America needed good men in office. My opponent then twisted those words and falsely said that I was claiming that I had Pastor Chuck’s endorsement. See how the game works and what politicians will do to stay in power?
Pastor Chuck’s clarifying message is absolutely correct-and perfectly consistent with our original message: He did not endorse me, but merely praised me and offered his general thoughts on what kind of men should be in public service. I was honored to receive that message.
But there’s a lesson here for all voters this year. We’re tired of the games politicians play in order to keep their power bases secure. Gary Miller’s tricks may have worked in the past but not this time.
I’m an ordained minister and have many friend who are ministers. To them and to Pastor Chuck I echo the words of Ronald Reagan who, speaking to a group of thousands of Evangelical Pastors in 1980 said: “You can’t endorse me but I endorse you!”
