When we last saw New York Democratic Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, she had succesfully buried an outrageous provision in an Intelligence Appropriations Bill coming out of her committee. A few weeks ago, she had OK’d a clause that would have allowed the prosecution of CIA agents involved in using enhanced interrogation techniques on al Qaeda terrorists. Even some of her fellow Democrats saw the insanity of what she tried to do and worked with Republicans to have the provision removed.

Now Ms. Slaughter is up to new antics. As head of the House Rules Committee, she’s come up with one doozy of a rule to get health care through: she’s suggesting that the House simply “deem” acceptance of the Senate bill. That way, no House Democrats actually have to vote on it! Problem solved! Yay!

The Democrats, with huge majorities in both chambers of Congress and the presidency, cannot get their health care “reform” done the old-fashioned way, so they have to resort to special deals, union exemptions, payoffs, flat-out bribery, and behind-closed-doors body-slamming (they’re at it again today.) They cannot get their own party to vote for the thing. The American people hate it.

So now Ms. Slaughter wants to channel her inner Chairman Mao and simply “deem” the Senate bill accepted by the House. No more debate. No more discussion. No more votes. Shut up and sit down.

The Democrats are subverting democracy in every way possible. They no longer deserve their party name.
