I’ve been closely following the antics of Patrick Byrne, CEO of a Utah-based internet retailer called Overstock.com. Overstock is mainly known for bad service, junky products and restocking charges if you try to send back their crud. To the media it is known for two things: accounting fraud and a company-financed smear campaign.
In addition to screwing customers, Overstock is under investigation by the SEC for fraudulent accounting, as well as for a sales tax fraud scheme recently revealed by The Big Money.
Overstock understandably hates press coverage, so it has engaged in crude taunting and smearing of reporters covering the company. It’s tactics work especially well in Utah, where the newspapers are so intimidated that they don’t even pretend to cover this strange company. Read on. . .
