My Letter Published in the WSJ: Bob Dole’s Corrupted Opinion on Bosnia
By Julia Gorin (bio)

Below is the original version of my letter that The Wall St. Journal published yesterday. Because of space considerations, there was no room for the whole story on Dole’s sordid machinations in the Balkans, which the version below details:

ET TU, BILL BENNETT?!
By Judith A. Klinghoffer (bio)

This morning Bill Bennett spent a good portion of his morning show complaining about the political correctness and moral equivalency that not only played a crucial role in the army’s failure to prevent the Fort Hood massacre but also in the inane refusal to face the Jihadist reality behind it. It is therefore ironic that Bennett fell into the same trap himself when he compared the Islamist psychiatrist Nidal Hasan with the brilliant scientist Stewart Nozette who wanted to spy for Israel.

US UNEMPLOYMENT WORSE THAT OF GERMANY, FRANCE , BRAZIL & JAPAN
By Judith A. Klinghoffer (bio)

To read headlines of American papers, one would conclude that Germany is in trouble, indeed, the entire world is in trouble, suffering from increasing unemployment. The reality is different. AP reports: World unemployment up despite economic recovery. The reality turns out to be different. German unemployment, unlike the American one, is continuing to drop. Do remember unemployment in both Germany and the US stood at 7.2% in Dec. 2008. Yes, before Obama passed the over half a trillion dollar stimulus.

The Fabric Of Our Society
By Cory Franklin (bio)

Amidst all the commentary about the tragic shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, many American writers and commentators are advising patience until we learn more details. At the same time, many of those same commentators are already speculating, based on what is already known. They throw out theories and spin the facts in every direction to suit their own particular leanings from whatever side of the political spectrum they happen to be on.

Spinning A Story
By Marilyn Penn (bio)

The rule of Occam’s Razor holds that the simplest of two or more competing theories is preferable and that an explanation for unknown phenomena should first be posited in terms of what is known.  Here is what we know about the killer at Fort Hood:  that the American born and bred Nidal Hasan still identified as a Palestinian and praised suicide bombers;  that after receiving all of his medical education and specialty training free, courtesy of the U.S. Army, he was unwilling to repay the debt he was bound to by the contract he signed up for;  that he became a more zealous Muslim in repeated contact with another American born radicalized Muslim imam;  that killing infidels is part of that extremist code of honor;  that the gun he used was purchased way before he found out that he was to be deployed to Afghanistan.  The slights that Hasan claimed as military discrimination against Muslims were the equivalent of schoolyard pranks but in the Muslim world, any slight may be a justification for honor killings.  We have been asked by all the higher-ups to suspend judgment until all the facts are known and though this is prudent advice, the story is currently being spun with the emphasis on the killer’s defensive mindset instead of the more objective narrative of events.  If we change the focus from what the killer might have been thinking to what he did, we get a clearer picture of the insidiousness of this terrorist act.

NO 72 VIRGINS FOR NIDAL MALIK HASAN
By Judith A. Klinghoffer (bio)

The man tried to do everything right. He cleansed himself and wore a white robe. He gave away his belonging, made sure he shot soldiers (which Islam does not consider “innocents”) and took care not to commit suicide just in case those who argue Islam prohibits it turn out to be right. He made sure he died in a shoot out, instead. And, still, Allah denied him heaven.

The Deficit Trap
By Amitai Etzioni (bio)

The Obama Administration is planning to start cutting the deficit soon for economic and political reasons. To now even merely discuss tax raises, expenditure cuts, and increases in interest rates that are entailed will slow the recovery. We know what must be done; it does not require long preparations. And there is no sign that the feared inflation that deficits are said to cause is anywhere in sight. True, once inflation settles in, it is difficult to eliminate — but it starts slowly. There is plenty of time.

The party dilemma
By William Katz (bio)

What we forget about Ronald Reagan is that he was a practical politician. Ideological? Yes, but only to a degree. A party disciplinarian? Yes, but the main discipline he imposed was to dictate that “thou shalt not speak ill of any other Republican” - something that came to be known as the 11th Commandment.

Pelosicare: A Lose-Lose-Lose for Democrats
By John J. Pitney,Jr. (bio)

Whatever happens to the health bill on the floor, Speaker Pelosi will end up with serious worries.
If the bill fails, then her leadership will have suffered a serious blow. Liberals will say that she should have pushed it farther to the left and moderates will blame her for caving to the liberals. And her archrival Steny Hoyer will look the way a vulture would look if a vulture could smile.
If the bill passes the House, she may still have trouble. The Senate might not pass anything, or it might only pass a version that House Democrats regard as a nothingburger. In that case, she will have forced dozens of members to cast a risky vote for little in return. Their memories will reach back to 1993, when the leadership got them to vote for an unpopular BTU energy tax, only to see the Senate drop it. Many of the Democrats who “got BTU’d” lost their seats in 1994.
If something close to the House bill makes it to the president’s desk, then a different headache arises. Even in the extremely-unlikely event that the measure actually works, it will take years for significant benefits to reach most ordinary Americans. But meanwhile, Democrats will have assumed political ownership of American health care. All major decisions on health care will take place as a result of the bill, or in anticipation of its effects. Fairly or unfairly, Democrats will get the blame for every premium increase, every unwanted change of coverage, and just about any hassle that anyone has with an insurer or provider. In that case, the “vulture smile” will be on the face of the guys who make Republican attack ads.

President Titanic
By Arnold Ahlert (bio)

Is there anything worse than a president who spent three minutes speechifying at a Dept. of Interior tribal leaders conference before mentioning the massacre of American soldiers at Ft. Hood? Maybe not. But coming in close second is the CBS television network, which decided to edit those first three minutes out of its news presentation in order to spare the president the national embarrassment he so richly deserves.

A Clueless Commander-in-Chief
By Arnold Ahlert (bio)

If published reports are accurate, Barack Obama’s presidency is effectively over. Strong words? Ask yourself this: what other president of the United States would have spent almost three minutes speaking at the Dept. of Interior before getting around to mentioning the fact that twelve soldiers had been killed, and thirty one wounded in a massacre at Fort Hood in Texas?

Americans’ Longing to be Average Fulfilled
By Julia Gorin (bio)

Below is an abridged version of a recent piece by Gregory Copley, director of Defense & Foreign Affairs Strategic Policy. He itemizes the ways in which America has been knocking itself down from superpower status, something that half the country has long longed for — and elected Barack Obama to culminate. It’s a phenomenon that I call “third world envy” as I occasionally muse: “I don’t know who’s more jealous — the third world of us, or us of the third world.” Of course, our third-world envy is partly born out of fear of the third world’s envy of us, and so we try to become less enviable, less rich, more socialist. The irony, of course, is that socialism breeds envy. Hence the Russian anecdote about the genie telling the old peasant woman that he will grant her one wish, but whatever she chooses, her neighbor will be twice as blessed. Her wish: “Make me blind in one eye.”

Fasten Your Seat Belts, Incumbents
By Arnold Ahlert (bio)

You have to hand it to liberal Democrats and their media sycophants. They are virtually impervious to both common sense and reality. Let me spell it out for both groups: Americans have had it with big government–and you’re still going to try and ram nation health care and cap-and-trade down our collective throats?

New Jersey, Virginia Say: Keep the Change
By Heather Robinson (bio)

I’m not sure if that is the case or if New Jersey and Virginia voters are simply spooked about the economy, or to what extent those two possibilities overlap. But as reporter and analyst Philip Klein pointed out tonight on the American Spectator’s site, traditionally, New Jersey is democratic. The state has not gone Republican in a Presidential election since 1988, and has not had a Republican governor since 1997. Significantly, Obama has made numerous recent visits there to campaign for the democratic incumbent, John Corzine, to no avail. So this election of Republican McDonnell is an upset.

Enough!
By Monica Crowley (bio)

Tonight Republicans Bob McDonnell and Chris Christie won the Governorships in Virginia and New Jersey, respectively. These were stunning victories for a party whose death certificate was considered signed, sealed, and delivered just one year ago. And even sweeter: the wins come in states that voted for Barack Obama by significant margins.

Just Because You Are Rich, Doesn’t Mean You Are Smart
By Cory Franklin (bio)

The most compelling argument is the danger these drugs pose to children. Professional athletes’ success with performance-enhancing drugs is a main reason the drugs are sought by teenagers – and a strong argument for banning them at the professional level. Even Norman Fost, a physician-ethicist who supports their use professionally, acknowledges the risks to young people. He favors testing young athletes. His punishment for those distributing drugs to them is simple and straightforward- “Hanging followed by a fair trial”.

ABSURDITY OF POLITICALLY CORRECT INSTANT ANALYSIS
By Judith A. Klinghoffer (bio)

At the moment the Israeli media, if not the citizenry, is obsessed with a horrific crime - the brutal murder of an entire family by a disgruntle employee. Last night the national news spent at least three minutes showing the murderer dancing in the wedding of the murdered. Thirty seconds would have sufficed. Still, the real trouble has to do with the instant analysis I heard on the Israeli NPR like morning show. Dr. Baruch Ovadia, a sociologist, placed the blame for the murder on the shoulders of the entire Israeli society and, indeed, on Judaism as a whole.

Glenn Beck and Mitt Romney’s “Dirty Little Secret”
By Dave Rosner (bio)

Glenn Beck and Mitt Romney not only both have great hair, they’re also both Mormons. I don’t know if good hair and Mormonism are related, but I’m sure an industrious Mormon preacher can find a link.  It is not news that Romney is a Mormon. The left-leaning media loudly beat the drum of Mormonism being at odds with Christianity during the Republican presidential primary. This was specifically aimed at the Christian Right. The left-wing happily blew any Mormon fears out of proportion in order to derail the republicans. But this smear tactic will not cause the same stumbling block for Romney in the next primary.

‘Twas the Night Before Voting
By Monica Crowley (bio)

And so tonight we rest before tomorrow’s hard work of turning the nation around. New Jersey, Virginia, and upstate New York, District 23: the eyes of the nation are upon you. You are the modern-day equivalent of Paul Revere, leading the charge, showing the way, and alerting the nation to what is coming. Say “no” to ballooning deficits, exploding debt, monumental taxes. Say “no” to a $2 trillion government takeover of health care. Say “no” to cap and trade, the biggest tax increase in the history of the world. Say “no” to bailouts and opt-outs and trillion dollar political buy-offs. Say “no” to the stealing of your freedoms and the rape of the Constitution.

ISRAELIS: WE MUST EXPLAIN (NOT DO) BETTER
By Judith A. Klinghoffer (bio)

Golda Meir famously said: “It does not matter what the world says, it matter what the Jews do.” A recent poll reveals that the majority of Israel’s Jewish citizens believe that when it comes to their relationship with the Arab world, the opposite is true. Speaking truth to power i.e., “the international community,” as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did at the UN, is the only thing that would make a difference. One thing is clear, the majority of Israelis believe they are right and are in no mood to apologize or appease. Indeed, Israel’s Palestinian problem would not be solved by ending settlements or creating a Palestinian state. Instead, it may be improved by convincing the legal world to distinguish between conventional war and the war on terror.

It’s where George W. Bush went to find love, and now where Bill Clinton has gone to find relevance: Greater Albania. Clinton traveled to Kosovo over the weekend to attend the long-anticipated unveiling of the statue honoring him for killing Serbs. The sculpture is taller and heavier than the actual man, and is reportedly less boring to talk to and has more character. [End.]

Pelosi’s Velvet Rope: Metal Fences
By Monica Crowley (bio)

Nancy Pelosi and the Gang of Lunatics who surround her unveiled a monstrous, 1,990 page health care “reform” bill. They did the deed on the west side of the Capitol, where presidents get sworn in, and which is usually open to the public. I say “usually,” because it wasn’t open to the public today. Today, it was closed off to you and me and our fellow Americans.
