2003: Sgt. Asan Akbar lobbed three grenades into tents housing commanding officers from the 101st Airborne Division in Kuwait. Two soldiers killed, fifteen injured.
2006: The Fort Dix jihadi plot, aimed at killing U.S. military personnel at the New Jersey base, was busted.
2006-2009: Other cells in Georgia, New York, and North Carolina were busted; Muslim members of those cells allegedly also had the intent to kill American servicemen at military installations.
2009: Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammed shot two U.S. military recruiters at the Army-Navy Career Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, killing one of them.
Yesterday: Major Malik Nadal Hasan went on a rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, shooting 12 people dead and injuring nearly 30 others.
There are plenty of Muslims who faithfully and honorably serve in the U.S. military. But there are also those who have become radicalized here at home, and who believe their loyalty rests not with and for the United States, but with Islam.
The military, like the rest of this country, needs to pay closer attention to these stealth threats. The military is tasked with fighting the war on Islamic terror abroad, but it must also realize that the war is within its ranks as well.
The enemy within can be more insidious than the enemy abroad, because it’s already here, pulsating in our national bloodstream, waiting to attack at any moment.
