You have to hand it to liberal Democrats and their media sycophants. They are virtually impervious to both common sense and reality. Let me spell it out for both groups: Americans have had it with big government–and you’re still going to try and ram nation health care and cap-and-trade down our collective throats?
Go right ahead. Keep insisting you know what’s better for us than we do. Keep telling the American people they’re too stupid to manage their own lives without your enlightened intervention. Keep living in the kind of make-believe universe that allows Nancy Pelosi to characterize Tuesday’s election as a “win” for Democrats, and a “mainstream” media to opine that losing governorships in Virginia by a blowout, and bluer-than-blue New Jersey by a hundred thousand votes has “nothing to do” with Barack “Mmm, mmm, mmm” Obama.
It has often been said that God, in his infinite wisdom, allows for compensations to balance deficiencies. Blind people, for example, gain a more acute sense of hearing or smell to offset their inability to see.
So it goes with liberals and the MSM. Their monumental over-reach, transparent lying, and disdain for American traditions and values is more than compensated for by a level of self-righteous egotism that eventually makes it almost impossible for a majority of Americans to embrace them.
Older Americans have seen this movie before. An electorate sick and tired of corrupt Republicans, elects a “newcomer” as the antidote to the status quo–and quickly discovers the antidote is worse than the original disease. Jimmy Carter quickly became the symbol of the aforementioned liberal over-reach and got sent packing, along with most of liberalism’s poisonous “solutions” to America’s problems.
Is history repeating itself? Yes and no.
If I were to guess the mood of the electorate, the bet here is that most Americans have had it with career politicians in both political parties. It is true Democrats got their collective butts kicked on Tuesday–but can anyone imagine Republican Newt Gringrich getting elected to anything? The race in New York’s 23rd Congressional district, in which Gingrich, along with establishment Republicans, ganged up with Democrats to a get a conservative defeated has given those Republicans a well-deserved pariah status among many of their would-be supporters.
It couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch–with the possible exception of hard-left Democrats, who look like they’re going to take the Mother of All Beatings in 2010.
About a year ago, I coined the acronym “G.R.O.I.N.”–as in Get Rid Of Incumbents Now. I’m beginning to believe that anti-incumbency fever will be a prime mover in the next couple of elections, as more and more American begin to realize that the “old boys (and girls) club” in Washington, D.C. is suffused with an “us first, Americans second” bipartisanship of the worst kind. Tossing all of them out would be a catharsis of gigantic proportions for the American electorate, which I believe is gearing itself up for the task.
Bette Davis, in the movie classic, “All About Eve” said it best: “Fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.”
Make that a ton of bumpy nights for incumbents in both parties between now and November 2010.
