In today’s edition of “Sonia Goes to Washington,” Judge Sotomayor was asked about her now-infamous statement (made repeatedly) that a “wise Latina woman” would come to a “better judgment” than your average white guy because of “the richness of her experiences.”
Her reply: “It was bad because it left an impression that I believed life experiences commanded a result in a case, but that’s clearly not what I do as a judge.”
Clearly not what she does as a judge?? Says her. I’ll bet that Frank Ricci and the other white and Hispanic New Haven firefighters she screwed over based on her “rich” “wise Latina” judgment would disagree.
She’s learned from Obama well: he uses that clever rhetorical formulation all the time. “As I’ve said before…” when he’s said no such thing before. “As my record shows…” when his record shows no such thing. And “that’s clearly not what I do as a judge…” when that’s exactly what she does as a judge.
Equal justice under the law is supposed to be blind.
Sister Sotomayor believes in justice unequally applied while looking through a magnifying glass.
