On his second day in office and with great fanfare, President Obama announced that he was ordering the closure of the terrorist detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba by January of next year.
Now comes a little detail: he’s not going to do it.
Early this morning, The Hill was still reporting that White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was adamant that the president was holding firm on the decision to close Gitmo. By this afternoon, Gibbs was saying that perhaps it was, in fact, a “hasty decision.”
Meaning: The Bama didn’t think it through before he announced it. And meaning: there are vastly complex legal and security issues with which to contend. And meaning: most U.S. politicians don’t want the terrorists transferred to American soil. And meaning: our allies don’t want them either.
And meaning: Bush was right. Again.
And so was Cheney.
Somewhere off in the distance, Keith Olbermann howls at the moon.
