For a long time, I’ve been waiting for a response to the stories of alleged horror after horror being “perpetrated” by U.S. troops at the Guantanamo detention facility. I felt that surely propaganda such as this about the camp was probably leaving out some relevant details. I also recalled Muslim former army chaplain James Yee — a Chinese-American who was demented enough to convert to Islam — painting a grim picture for the London Times in 2005 about our operation there. Again, it didn’t seem like we were getting the whole story.
This month, as Barack Obama assumes the presidency and places the closing of Gitmo at the top of his agenda, a book that may prove to be the most important read of the decade is being released. Look for former Green Beret, Lieutenant Colonel Gordon Cucullu’s Inside Gitmo: The True Story Behind the Myths of Guantanamo Bay, a work that may have a huge impact on the final outcome of Gitmo’s closing or not.
Its content aside, the book may revolutionize the non-fiction publishing industry with its companion website that allows readers to go directly to the endnoted source material, and updates the book with related follow-up stories as news happens. The debunking of the Guantanamo myths such as those linked above, is present on the site itself, as Col. Cucullu wrote me:
You can see a lot of stuff on the site refuting some of the hyperbolic statements from Yee and others. Just for info, in the case he cites about a detainee being struck by a hand-held radio, he neglects to tell us that the detainee in question had attacked a guard and had his teeth sunk into the guard’s face when the other struck him to get him off. He also omits the fact that the guard who did the hitting was disciplined (in my view unfairly) and reduced in rank one grade.
My interviews told me that Yee had allowed himself to be co-opted by the detainees and was in fact smuggling contraband items to them as well as acting in more of an advocacy role than his job allowed. He is now a well-known apologist for the detainees and critic of Gitmo.
