“And guess what this liberal will be all about. This liberal will be about socializing, uh, um…will be about basically taking over, and the government running all of your companies”–Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) during a House of Representatives hearing with oil executives.
Ms. Waters has the let proverbial cat out of the socialist bag. In a genuine “Hugo Chavez moment,” she revealed both the contempt she and others like her have for private enterprise–and the arrogance of politicians who believe “more government” is the solution for everything.
The central lie of liberalism is the belief that self-interest and selfishness are one and the same. The people who inhabit Congress–many of whom have never done an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay in their entire lives–are especially adept at deciding what is “fair” for those who keep the country working.
And there’s the rub for people like Ms. Waters. If you nationalize the oil industry and the people in it decide they don’t want to work for the “government oil company,” then what?
It’s not a new question, nor is its answer. History is replete with the inevitable “choice” given to those who have refused to kowtow to tin-pot collectivists like Maxine Waters: slave labor or the gulag.
There was a time in this country when the statement made by Ms. Waters would have been met with disgust and astonishment. Tragically, far too many entitlement-addled Americans no longer recoil at the notion of jackhammering the essence of the American story to bits. They want what they want, and if capitalism and individual freedom stand in the way? To hell with them both.
This is exactly the “yes we can” snake oil liberal Democrats are promoting. It remains to be seen how many historically- deficient Americans are willing to trade their birthright for the promise of cheap gas and other government-dispensed “goodies.”
Speaking of history, all of them should remember one thing: for seventy years, Eastern Europe bought precisely what Maxine Waters, Barack Obama, and the rest of the liberal Democrats are selling as “change:” government-sponsored panacea. Then the Berlin Wall was broken down.
From the inside.
