In the discussion of Barack Obama’s comments about small town Pennsylvanians over the weekend, we’ve missed another Obama gem.
During Sunday evening’s “Compassion Forum,” a question and answer session with the candidates broadcast by CNN from Pennsylvania’s Messiah College, Obama delivered a mighty strange and disconcerting statement. He was asked about an earlier comment in which he said he wouldn’t want to see his daughters “punished with a baby” if they “make a mistake.”
His response to the request for clarification included: “…if, at the age of 12 or 13, they made what I would consider to be a mistake, in having sex or unprotected sex, and ended up getting pregnant…” He went on to discuss the host of likely problems that would ensue.
Let’s analyze this bizarre statement. What [HE] WOULD CONSIDER to be a mistake? In what or whose universe would a 12 or 13-year-old girl’s having unprotected sex that could result in pregnancy NOT be a mistake?
Can you imagine if George Bush–or any other major presidential candidate–had made this statement? The media would have had a field day tearing it/him apart, and rightly so.
To be crystal clear: I’m not suggesting Barack Obama doesn’t love his girls or that he wants them to get pregnant or any such nonsense. Just that the statement is so bizarre and illogical I’m not sure what it suggests. But whatever it is, it isn’t good.
