The crowd in Los Angeles for Thursday night’s Democratic debate roared when Senators Clinton and Obama were asked if they’d chose the other for the vice presidential slot.
Never going to happen.
First, the country says it wants change, but a woman and an African-American on the same ticket is a little too much change. Even for Democrats.
Second, neither one will take number two. If Hillary is the nominee, she won’t want to be upstaged by a more charismatic VP. No president wants to be eclipsed by a bigger superstar. And if Obama is the nominee, he won’t want the Clinton duo freelancing underneath him. And if he doesn’t get the nomination, he won’t want to be stuck in the “warm spit” oblivion of VP. He will keep his machinery in place to run again in 4 years—for the top job.
And third, both Clinton and Obama are Senators. Senators rarely get elected president because voters prefer executives for the top executive job. The last Senator to win the White House was John Kennedy, and he was a pretty extraordinary candidate. Obama is in a similar league of his own. But whether the nominee is Clinton or Obama, she or he will have to choose a governor, or a mayor. Two legislators on the ticket are not going to fly.
Given all of this, somebody will be sitting on the couch next to Bill Clinton today watching the Super Bowl. Sharing chips n’ dip. Digging into a bowl of chili together.
Who is Bill’s special Game Day guest?
New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.
