If You Were a Terrorist, How Would You Attack? This is a straightforward, smart article by the author of Freakonomics. His thoughts on possible terror strikes are, I admit, the same ones I had but did not publish. I am amazed that terrorists have not tried what he describes in this piece, and for just the reasons he suggests. Their failure to attempt this low-risk, ultra-high-payoff ploy says to me that leaders of terror groups think more about theatricality than practicality.
And, yes, I am familiar with the argument that putting these ideas out there is simply feeding plans to terrorists. I think it’s more important to get scary ideas out there in public and thus encourage defense against them than it is to hope that terrorists won’t ever come up with these simple ideas on their own.
