Here’s a story in which a purportedly “empirical” study determined that one in six jury verdicts is incorrect. Now, let’s consider that assertion for a second or two. Isn’t a jury’s decision correct by definition?
Who made himself God in this study to declare which juries are right and which are wrong? If I’m in an anti-death penalty group, I’ll bet I think a whole lot of decisions are wrong. If I’m one of those knuckleheads who believes Mumia abu Jamal is God’s other son instead of a cop killer, I’ll find a lot of jury choices wrong. This “study” sounds little like a study and more like a platform for advocating more liberal courtroom standards. Wait and see–that’s what it’ll be.
