Paris Hilton was sentenced to 45 days in jail. That sentence was reduced to 23 days. Ms. Hilton has just been released–after serving three days.
Before your eyes glaze over, let me assure you this column is not about that dim-bulb celebrity heiress, other than the fact the she is now a poster child representing the special treatment “special people” get with respect to the rule of law. Once again America is reminded, “the rich are not like you and me.”
As obnoxious as this obvious double-standard is, it is not shocking. Special treatment has long been doled out to the rich or well-connected. What is shocking is that special treatment is about to “go egalitarian”–if another group of rich and well-connected individuals known as Congress gets their way. If they are successful, millions of illegal aliens will also be able to thumb their collective noses at the rule of law.
In the case of Paris Hilton, Americans will have to sit back and take it. We’ll have to listen to all the double-talk, the legalese and the rationalization–all in defense of the indefensible.
The legalization of millions of border-busters, their anchor babies and their extended families? Americans don’t have to take it. Not by a long shot. We don’t have to buy into the same kind of double-talk, legalese or rationalization, all in defense of the indefensible. We don’t have to buy into another round of promises exactly like those that were ignored or broken when America went through it’s last devil’s bargain known as the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. What reform? What control?
Paris Hilton is the beneficiary of something known as “celebrity justice.” That Congress is on the verge of granting celebrity justice to millions of illegal immigrants–with who knows how many terrorists mixed in–is beyond comprehension.
Either we are a nation of laws or a nation of men. If Americans sit back and accept the latter, this country will be irretrievably damaged. The “everybody breaks the law, so why not me” mentality will not be confined within immigration arena. Cynicism will insinuate itself into every aspect of American–or could it be post-American–culture.
This country can handle the occasional miscarriage of justice that allows a brat like Paris Hilton to walk out of jail. it cannot handle the wholesale miscarriage of justice Congress is contemplating. It is up to us to put an end to it. If you’re not involved, get involved. Involved enough to take the tiny bit of time out of your day necessary to call, e-mail, or write your representatives. Let them know in no uncertain terms that if illegal immigrants are on their way in–they are on their way of out of Washington, D.C.
