Despite being loaded with negative cultural stereotypes - mostly involving blacks, but also of Asians - Eddie Murphy’s “Norbit” debuted in first place at the box office. Even critics who bemoaned the film - which was almost all of them - failed to call him on his blatant racism.
True, as a black comic, Eddie Murphy has the cultural green light to traffic in black stereotypes, but “Norbit” is rife with so many of them that it makes you wish his creative license could be revoked. The movie only wants to be a laugh riot, yet the cultural self-loathing on display is so offensive that I’m afraid a race riot would be a more proper response.
