This week, Canada’s politically correct national broadcaster, the CBC, debuted Little Mosque on the Prairie, a situation comedy about Muslims living in a small town in rural Saskatchewan. Like just about every other Canadian sitcom ever made, the show is self-conscious and painfully unfunny. (For some reason, my country exports very funny comedians to Hollywood, but can’t make a decent sitcom to save itself. Don’t know why.) Nevertheless, it is an interesting case study in the mental workings of more-tolerant-than-thou liberal television producers here in the Great White North.
The basic premise of the show is that the Muslim protagonists are more or less normal folk while most of the non-Muslims they meet are bumbling bigots. There’s a very fine column about the show (by someone who just happens to be related to me) in Thursday’s edition of the National Post. There are a few viewable clips from the show on the show’s Web site. Youtube also has a lengthy clip from the first episode.
