Lots of conservatives are scoffing at the Baker study’s group’s report. (See below.) They shouldn’t.
It doesn’t matter how original its recommendations are. The point of the commission was two-fold: to kick-start the debate over Iraq’s future among political elites, especially in the GOP, which it has, and to push Bush out of his reflexive crouch, which it may have.
Too soon to tell, though Bush shows signs that he recognizes he has to change course, even if he doesn’t really like the idea. And if Bush doesn’t get cracking, Congress will, Democrats and Republicans alike.
