The sad news that John Bolton becomes yet another casualty of Beltway political friction is another example of Republican Party inepititude and moral cowardice in the face of hostile Democrats and media. In his brief recess-appointment tenure at the feckless UN, Bolton accomplished major diplomatic victories, pushing through resolutions against North Korea, distancing American support for a fatally flawed Human Rights Commission, and more.
In his short time he accomplished much, enough certainly to be listed with Jeanne Kirkpatrick and Patrick Moynihan as exemplary ambassadors.
Ideally he would be moved back to the State Department and arrive on Day 1 with a chainsaw in hand. Of all dysfunctional Executive Branch agencies, State is the worst and cries loudest for root-level reform. However, that may be a pipe dream in a period where the GOP seems sanguine about resuming a comfortable minority role in Congress and the President seems willing to wear the lame duck tag his enemies are trying hard to pin on him.
