Jon Carthew is the maker of a sausage in Wales called “Welsh Dragon Sausages.” The name makes sense because the sausages are spicy and the dragon is Wales’ national symbol.
Unfortunately, Mr. Carthew has run afoul of the nanny state. Trading standards inspectors from the local county council have threatened Mr. Carthew with prosecution unless he changes the name of the sausage. It seems that the government is concerned that Mr. Carthew is deceiving the public because his sausages do not actually contain dragon meat.
The fact that Mr. Carthew turns out over 200,000 sausages a year without complaint seems not to have made any impression on the consumer protection advocates. In the face of a threatened prosecution, Mr. Carthew has decided to change the name of his sausages to “Welsh Dragon Pork Sausages.”
There’s no word yet on whether the local council will now investigate the local baker. Word is, he’s been selling danish pastry that isn’t actually made in Denmark.
