Gary Rosen, managing editor of Commentary magazine, has an excellent piece appearing next week in the National Interest, a foreign policy monthly, that makes the case for securing Baghdad. He calls it “Baghdad or bust.”
As Rosen notes, the idea is not new, but he expands upon it to make a provocative case that a peaceful Baghdad would serve as a model for the rest of the Iraq. At this late date, the American public is obviously weary of the war, and my own guess is that a dismal, protracted pullout–executed under another name–is in the cards. But Rosen makes a sober case for reexamining this mess and figuring out how to at least try and create the basis for a new Iraq.
