Well, we’ve left the San Francisco Bay area. Yes, we’re in the process of relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina.
After living and working in the Bay Area for a number of years, my wife and I realized that we just couldn’t do it. We could not stay. We loved the area. We lived in the Napa Valley and the geography and topography were unbeatable. The sunrises and sunsets were spectacular. Weather was lovely and the vineyards produced some wonderful vintages. So why leave? Why give all of that up?
It is simple, actually. We have three small children and we could not raise them in area where our values and morals were consistently ridiculed. We did not want to live among people who believed we were religious zealots because we believe in G-d. We could not raise our children among people who believed we must have been members of some cult since we had “so many” children. Our neighbors were the self proclaimed voices of tolerance and diversity and inclusion and they were thrilled to tolerate and include you so long as you said everything they thought. Disagree on anything and clearly you were a bigot or a xenophobe or homophobe or some other sort of “phobe” as yet unnamed.
It may take me a little longer to write columns and get them up than in the past. I am busy trying to look at new homes. I am busy meeting future friends and neighbors who are happy to tell me about the local faith community. These are people who know where the synagogues are located, when services are conducted and gosh they think my family is actually on the small side!
My next column will be a movie review of sorts. The movie The Last Kiss is a pretty bad film, but what is worse is the underlying theme. I’ll talk about that with you very soon.
L’shana Tovah!
