One of the unexpected results of the war against terror has been to embolden–or more precisely, force–Germany to take an active military role.
Yesterday the German parliament approved sending Germany has just sent 1,000 naval forces to help patrol Lebanese waters. The Bush administration is understandably relying on European Union members to pitch in militarily–but I wonder if what we’re going to see is a commensurate rise in European political influence when it comes to the Middle East.
Is this the beginning, however modest, of a European Union foreign policy that’s going to give the U.S. fits in the future?
