An expose of the ridiculous movie rating system run by the Motion Picture Association of America, “This Film is Not Yet Rated” is a much-needed muckraking documentary that rakes the wrong muck – at least if the filmmakers hope to inspire change.
Director Kirby Dick spends a lot of time talking to provocative filmmakers about how the system censors their art, which is true, but more pressing for the average moviegoer would be a discussion of ratings creep, which has allowed violence to gradually increase in studio movies so that PG-13 now means that just about anything goes (or can be dismembered).
For parents, whose kids largely fund Hollywood, the MPAA ratings system has become useless. “This Film is Not Yet Rated” doesn’t spend nearly enough time on that fact.
